The Indian Marker Trees are of many different types and varied shapes.  They range across the entire state representing many different Native American tribes, and are connected with other tribes across the continent.

The trees tell a story of how the Natives traveled about before the settlers arrived, why they came and went, and how many of the ancient trails became many roadways and corridors we travel today.

A more detailed history and types of trees shown on this website can be found in the first edition of Dr. Smith's book titled "Field Guide to Finding Indian Marker Trees" First edition which can be purchased online from Amazon.

Since the first printing much more information has been collected which can be tied to the first colonizations of the continent, from the locations and establishments of the early Missions bringing Christianity to the New World, to the forts which were created to allow for the movement westward to the Pacific Coast, and the wagons and horses which led the migrations, to the legends of the Comanche who were the greatest nomadic war machine of their time.
